Faith & Sacramental Life of the Defence Forces
The journey of faith begins for each one of us in baptism. As chaplains we are privileged to accompany parents and godparents as they prepare for baptism.
We are also on hand for the celebration of Mass and the Sacrament of Penance at home and overseas. Sunday Mass in Barracks gives weekly and daily spiritual support while Mass or Holy Communion Services "out on the ground" gives much-appreciated time for reflection and prayer.
Marriage Preparation and Guidance
Over the course of our work, we help couples prepare for marriage in their parish church or their garrison chapel. Proper planning and preparation for the wedding day provides great opportunities for developing faith and awareness of the joy of faith.
Since November 2007, new guidelines have come into effect. A pdf link to an information booklet is included on this page (to the right). Please contact your chaplain, local parish priest or curate for further information when you have read this booklet.
Overseas Opportunities
Work overseas has opened the doors to the memorable Holy Land Pilgrimage, the 15th of August celebrations at Letnica in Kosovo and Christmas Day celebrations at local parishes in Liberia, Eritrea and Somalia.
Pèlerinage Militaire à Lourdes
The annual Military Pilgrimage to Lourdes is a great gathering-point for peacekeepers and their families at the Grotto of Lourdes. Friends and colleagues from other countries gather each year for this enjoyable weekend of faith and fraternity in May.
Signs of Christian Farewell
Another important dimesion of our work is organising the military community to bid farewell to colleagues and family at times of bereavement. The ties of friendship and affection which knit us as one in life do not unravel in death and the days around a funeral afford everyone valuable time to reflect on the gift of life and the gift of faith.
